With sunny days ahead, it's time to reflect on your sunscreen routine.  Did you know that an estimated 90% of the signs of aging are caused by the sun?  Not to mention the more serious health repercussions of sun exposure.  I grew up in the ‘70s and ’80s and remember playing all day in the sun without protection…
Our parents didn't know any better--We have no excuse!
  • Use Broad Spectrum sunscreen to ensure protection against both UVA and UVB rays; UVA rays cause premature aging and UVB rays cause sunburns and skin cancer (this is how I remember it: A= “aging”; B= “bad”).
  • UVA rays are prevalent throughout all seasons and are not blocked by clouds or glass…this is why you need to wear sunscreen even on cloudy days and when working inside.
  • High-Energy Visible (HEV) blue light is emitted from the sun, along with smartphones, tablets, and computer screens…and also contributes to skin damage & aging.
  • Chemical sunscreens are far inferior to mineral sunscreens--chemical formulations absorb into the skin and work by absorbing the sun's UV rays, both of which are problematic on multiple levels…and also mean that these sunscreens need to be applied well in advance of sun exposure to work effectively
    • chemical ingredients have been linked to allergic reactions, and can worsen rosacea and melasma (a condition causing brown patches over the face, forearms, & neck)
    • two common chemical sunscreen ingredients, oxybenzone & octinoxate, have contributed to the devastating collapse of coral reefs
  • Mineral sunscreens are safer & more effective, for several reasons:
    • they form a barrier over the skin, reflecting light; the barrier function allows for almost immediate protection
    • they don't contain harsh synthetic chemicals nor are they absorbed--so they are safer for sensitive skin & cause less irritation…which also means they are safer for acne-prone skin (unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb and clog pores)
    • the most common active ingredients (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) have well-proven safety track records

Beautycounter took all of this into account when formulating its
 Countersun mineral sunscreen line
  • Broad spectrum coverage against UVA, UVB, & HEV blue light rays
  • Non nano-zinc oxide mineral formulations--Why is that important?  Inhaled nano-materials can adversely affect health and may have ecological impacts; given these potential risks, Beautycounter will not use nanotechnology or nanoparticles
  • Completely reef-friendly
